The $1 Dining Room Table

Hi There!

I got a quick story for you…
One day last fall, I was driving home from the North side of town.
I had gone to try and buy some boots from a girl off Craigslist. They didn’t fit.
I drove by a house that was having it’s contents emptied into a dumpster, and put by the curbside.
Here is what I saw:
Dirty? Yup.
Worn and seen better days? Yup.
Water rings? Yup.
Some white paint or something stuck to the top? Yup.
FREE? YUP!!

Did it have any of the hardware? No.
Did it have the leaves to extend the top? No.
Was I leaving it behind? NO!!
One more question:
Would it fit in my car? No.
So, I drove home and showed the above photos to my boyfriend. I told him that it was just like the table I grew up with. ( My Dad would later confirm that it was just like the table we had at our old house. ) I asked if we could go get it? He said, Yup.
So, in the van we went and picked up this table and 4 heavy dining chairs that were curbside too. Look for a post about them coming soon!

My boyfriend sanded this table for days…
He loves that kind of work!
We couldn’t  believe that the bad, dark, 70’s finish was only a 1/4″ deep.
The table was coming so clean!

I loved it so much more with the raw wood. Too pretty!

Here he is after all the dust had been cleaned off.
The wood was super dry, so I knew we were going to have to stain it. We found a can of stain from the thrift store that was only $1.
( See why it is the $1 Dining Room Table? )

I love this sort of non-stain stain color. It lets the color of the wood really shine through!
I love the knots and the reds and grays in the wood.
I am totally loving the “raw” wood finishes right now. This is exactly what I hoped it would look like!
Here is a photo from Easter Dinner.
The table got two satin clear coats to protect it.
I just love it! And so does my boyfriend!
He put so much work into it, we are using it in the dining room. Even though it is slightly too big.
Have you gotten anything for free?
Did you put some work into it and make it all your own?
Thanks for stopping by!
