Dollar Store Mushroom to Fairy Garden Toadstool

Do I have an easy upcycle for you! All on a Dollar Store Budget too. Are you ready to get your craft on?

Dollar Tree Fairy Garden supplies
A Dollar Store Fairy Garden. As is it’s cute, but I know we can do better

Every year the Dollar Tree has Fairy Garden supplies for Spring. I always grab a couple of items to add to my collection. This year I grabbed a few of these terra cotta garden mushrooms to add to the mix. Let’s see if we can take these Dollar Store Mushrooms and make some Fairy Garden Toadstools

Earthy Speckled Mushrooms

Dollar Store Mushroom- from fine to fantastic!

These brown, white, red, gold and green speckled garden mushrooms are great as is. I actually really like to colors and how the paints are mixed together. But I wanted something just a little more fantasy-like.

Out came the painter’s tape and a can of red spray paint.

You can fix mistakes

Turn that DIY Fail into a DIY Hail!

I started to draw simple polka dots on the mushroom with a white paint pen before I took the painters tape off the stems. When I did finally remove it- there I saw it- the red river of bad tape job shame.

Now what?

The red paint, unfortunately, ran under the painter’s tape. To cover my bad tape job, I placed the mushrooms on a box and spray painted the stems of the mushrooms with gold paint to cover the runs. There we go- so much better!

How about a little Nail Polish?

Nail Polish and a White Paint Pen

For this toadstool I decided to use this bright blue color nail polish I had in my stash. It covered very nicely and I love how bright it is. Then a white paint pen to make some polk a dots and we’re good to go!

Once these have dried for a day or two- I will go back and give them a clear protective coat. To make my work last and the colors stay vibrant.

Are you ready to see the after?

I think choosing to use the gold paint to cover my mistake gave these Fairy Garden Toadstools the fantasy-like look I was after. Once again- paint is a wonder!
