$100 Rental Kitchen Makeover Reveal

It is reveal week for the $100 Room Challenge!

It’s been a cold and gray January here in Michigan- but not in my little rental kitchen anymore! We are bright and sunny over here. Are you ready to see what we’ve been up to? Are you ready to see my $100 Rental Kitchen Makeover Reveal? I just can’t wait to show you how it all came together!

$100 Room Challenge- One room One month $100

Working on my $100 Rental Kitchen Makeover Reveal for the $100 Room Challenge this month has been fun. I love this challenge because it truly proves that with some creativity you don’t need a lot of money to make real change in your home. Check out my other posts in this months challenge-

Make sure to see what all of the other participants were able to do for under $100 at the bottom of the post.

The before-

Our rental Kitchen Before- good bones, but no cohesive style

Our tiny rental house kitchen before- we decorated and styled a couple of times since moving in seven years ago, but it just needed to be redone top to bottom. A complete scrub down, paint and refresh was clearly in order.

And we made so much progress for under $100!

Here is the after- what a difference!

We are so pleased with how this tiny 9×12 foot rental kitchen came together. The kitchen is so much brighter and cheerful. It finally feels like our kitchen- not just a rental.

The vintage sideboard got a Sunflower yellow coat of paint

I had a list of design elements that I wanted to bring to this kitchen to make it feel more like us 🙂

  • White walls
  • Warm woods
  • Painted cabinets
  • Fresh Green Plants
  • Open shelving
  • A vintage patterned rug
  • Gold or Brass accents

All of these were renter-friendly and completely attainable for any kitchen. I was able to bring them all in and for under $100!

The backsplash got a bold white and yellow wallpaper

This was the plan and for the first time I was able to check all of these tasks off the list-

  • Deep clean everything from top to bottom
  • Paint the ceiling
  • Paint the walls white
  • Stencil or wallpaper a backsplash
  • Purge the pantry
  • Paint sideboard, and other furniture pieces to match
  • Swap out all cabinet knobs for something gold or brass
  • Change metal bins for woven baskets
  • Bring in more low light plants
  • Add vintage-looking style rug

The wallpaper and painted yellow sideboard make the countertop and cabinets look fresh

We were able to get the whole room cleaned and painted in one weekend. Which made it still usable for the rest of the makeover.

Refinishing the sideboard took a lot of work but was well worth the effort.
I am loving this sunflower yellow color

Painting all of the the furniture pieces were spread out over two more weekends. Refreshing our own pieces in the room helped make the room feel more like us.

This vintage sideboard was a great piece that just needed some love. New yellow paint, cleaned up hardware, and a stained wood top gave it new life. I am in love with it again!

Using leftover wallpaper with a bold pattern gave so much personality to our little rental kitchen. And because it is removable- it is renter-friendly. We can just remove it when we decide to leave.

Our coffee bar area looks stylish and intentional.

Using decor that I already had to style the kitchen- woven trivets, melamine trays, a clock, a tile, and plant cuttings to add some life. Saved us so much on the budget. When making over any room- always shop your home first!

This is such a cozy spot first thing in the morning.

I love how the kitchen flows to our back door now. I made over the back door and porch area for my last $100 Room Challenge- you can see that transformation here- $100 Back Porch Makeover Reveal

Our open pantry feels much more organized and contained.

The pantry is so much more clean and organized now. I used a mis-tint paint to give it new life. But if I am honest- which I will always be- I think I am going to paint it green to match the other cabinets. The mushroom gray color is great- it’s light and bright. But since I painted the other cabinets green- I really want this green too.

That will be another project for another time 😉

I am loving this green color- it feels so fresh and happy

See what I mean? This spring green color is amazing. It was also a mis-tint and I ran super low. Which is ok- I can have it color matched later.

Working at the stove is so much more inviting with the yellow wallpaper and green cabinet.

Swapping out the hardware on the cabinets was such an easy upgrade for our $100 Rental Kitchen Makeover. The knobs and bin pulls I had leftover from another project. I originally wanted gold or brass finish- but love this matte black just as much.

I am so happy with this rug!
It looks vintage, but it’s new and a cushy foam material that can be machine washed.
Washing dishes at the sink is so much more enjoyable with the new wallpaper
and plant cuttings in the window

Want to know how did I do with my $100 budget? Here’s the breakdown:

  • TSP Heavy-duty cleaner- 1 pound box for $3.89– to clean the walls and ceiling
  • Ceiling Paint- $15– only used half the gallon
  • Wall paint- $32– used the whole can.
  • Paint Stripper- $12.50– for paint removal of the top of the sideboard
  • miss-tint furniture paint- $15- $5 each for gray, yellow, and green paint
  • Vintage style rug- $12.99- from Home Goods
  • wallpaper for backsplash- $0- had on hand (leftover from another project and was $34 originally. A little pricey but you can find other affordable rolls online)
  • knobs and bin pull hardware for cabinets- $0 had in stash from another project (the bin pulls were from Amazon and only $10 for 20 pieces)
  • Pothos plant cuttings in clear glass jars- $0 used recycled jars and cut the cuttings from a mother plant.
  • TOTAL: $91.38

Well, what do you think? Amazing what a deep clean and some paint can do, right? I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish for under $100! It has really transformed this rental house to feel more like our home.

  1. Jacki, this room is so pretty now. I love the colors you used and the wallpaper is amazing! The room is so bright and beautiful. I know you are enjoying it.

  2. I want this kitchen! It is so bright and cheery. I love the wallpaper and the new sideboard color… and I think the panty would be cute in that green also, even though that means repainting. I love that you give the perspective of being in a rental. I think so many feel there isn’t much they can change, but you proved otherwise. This space is beautiful! Thank you so much for joining another round of the challenge!

  3. The yellow and green are so bright and cheery! Looks awesome! I want to run to my HomeGoods to see if they have those rugs too!

  4. I love all the details you’ve put in here, and how creative you got with the restrictions of renting! That sunny yellow sideboard is to die for and I love how you’ve weaved that color around the room. And that wallpaper backsplash – so fun and pretty!
