Hi there! I am taking part in a fun challenge with a great group of home decor and DIY bloggers for the month of January. This is week two for the $100 Room Challenge. The rules for the challenge are simple- One Month, One Room, all for $100! It’s a great way to get a new look for any room at a pretty affordable price. The limited budget is a great way to push yourself to get creative and stretch those decorating dollars

Today I’m sharing with you a quick update of where we are with the progress of our Week Two-$100 Kitchen Refresh for this months challenge.

Rental Kitchen Makeover for $100

Clear out, clean up, and Paint

$100 Kitchen Refresh- our rental kitchen freshly painted white top to bottom
A clean, bright white, blank slate

To get this makeover started- I cleared out and clean up the whole kitchen from top to bottom. Taking everything out and putting it in another room was the first step. I moved everything to our tiny dining room and tried to keep it organized so that we could still find things while the kitchen was being painted. I did pretty well- I knew exactly where the coffee went 🙂

Then it was time to wash down the ceiling and walls with warm water and a TSP cleaner. I decided that since this is the kitchen- and there can be so much food and grease residue in a kitchen. It would be best to use a TSP heavy-duty cleaner designed to prep walls for painting.

White Paint is Everything!

Walls freshly painted white

After the ceiling and walls were washed and dried- I gave them both two coats of fresh white paint. I am so happy that I decided to go with white- the kitchen is so much brighter and feels so clean and fresh.

**Sidenote- Do you want to go Raw Food Vegan? Just wash your ceiling- that dirty water will make you want to give up cooking altogether. 😛

The Perfect White paint that I chose for the walls is a cool white color with a slight blue undertone. Which is just perfect! The cool white helps balance all of the yellow warm tones of the wood cabinets and checkered flooring.

Sideboard makeover is underway- the top got stripped of all its black paint

This vintage sideboard came from garage sale and has been painted so many times!

Since the kitchen had been cleaned out I took advantage of the space and started the makeover for the sideboard while the paint on the walls were drying. I used a no-fumes paint gel stripper to take the paint off the top-and there were many coats to remove! I used the full bottle- but now I just need to sand and stain the top. Then I will be able to paint the base with a new accent color.

Pantry got a fresh coat of gray paint

Week two- $100 Kitchen Refresh- the open pantry got a coat of mushroom gray paint
Quirky vintage cupboard painted a mushroom gray color

Using a miss-tint can of paint from the hardware store I was able to paint the rest of our pantry furniture pieces to match. It’s a lovely mushroom- brown-gray color. I didn’t know what color I wanted to paint these pieces when I started- but I am glad that I found this miss-tint paint. It saved me money and it saved me a decision too!

My DIY pro-tip to you- always check the miss-tint cans of paint at the hardware store. You can get some good quality paint for a deep discount. I was able to get this mushroom gray furniture paint- which normally retails $28 a quart for just $5! That seems so worth it to me

  • miss-tint furniture paint- $5
Another vintage cupboard painted mushroom gray

Where am I at with my $100 Kitchen Refresh plan?

  • Deep clean everything from top to bottom
  • Paint the ceiling
  • Paint the walls white
  • Stencil or wallpaper a backsplash
  • Purge the pantry
  • Paint sideboard, and other furniture pieces to match
  • Swap out all cabinet knobs for something gold or brass
  • Change metal bins for woven baskets
  • Bring in more low light plants
  • Add vintage-looking style rug

Two weeks in and I am about half way there.

Uh-oh! something is sure to go wrong now…

Week two- $100 Kitchen refresh- the stove area cupboard got a mushroom gray color paint job
The small cupboard by the stove got a paint job too!

And what about the budget?

I am currently sitting at just under $70, which leaves $30 to finish. I think I can do it!

Check out everyone else’s projects with the links below! There are some really fun rooms getting makeovers this time around- a playroom, a couple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a stairway just to name a few.

You are sure to find inspiration for your next project!

  1. WOW!!! This is looking so good. The white paint, of course, makes everything look brighter and I love the top on the sideboard. I am all about the oops paint section. I typically go to our recycle center for free paint, but the recycle center has been closed ever since Covid struck, so I haven’t been able to check on paint there. Things are looking so good in here! (Also, your comment about raw vegan 🙂 )

  2. I am loving your miss-tint paint 🙂 It’s a great colour and will lighten it up. I also looove your idea for adding the vintage buffet to the end of the counter for more space. I can’t wait to see the room reveal!
