$100 Room Challenge- What happens when the Design plan changes?

I have been so lucky to be taking part in a fun blogger challenge. It’s the $100 Room Challenge hosted by the lovely Erin of lemonslavenderandlaundry.com Simply put the challenge is using only $100 to refresh or redecorate one room in one months time. Just the type of challenge that this budget loving girl loves! Count me in!

The room that I’ve been working on is our tiny little Bathroom. I had already painted the Bathroom two years ago, and I am still loving the light gray color- you can see that transformation here. Also, we are renting our cute little house so I would not be doing any major construction projects. The plan was to change up all of the decorations to give the Bathroom a change of style. Simple changes that anyone can do on a budget whether you rent or own your home. With my need for change, it would be a nice way to give me that creative outlet.

But what happens when your design plan changes? In the last few days of the challenge before the revel?

Don’t Panic!

Let’s go over the progress from the last week, and I will show you where things took a turn.

One item on the list was to make new curtains for the window. I wanted them to be fun and playful. They needed to be a lighter fabric to let more natural light in this East facing window. I had spent $7.99 on a sheer curtain panel and pom-pom trim. Then I cut and ironed and sewed them and got what you see above. If you would like to see how I did it and hear a couple of novice sewing tips go to this post. When all was said and done I hung them and then I immediately hated them! But time was ticking along, so I decided to live with them and see. Oh, we will see…

Another project that I had in the plan was the change up the Artwork. Using a thrift store canvas, paint, stencil, and scrap wood- I made this pretty tile pattern DIY Stenciled Artwork. I love how it turned out! It is not perfect by any means, and that’s okay! This only cost me $1.50 for the thrift store canvas, everything else I already had in my stash. And best of all, I think that anyone could do it! Do you want to make one for yourself? Check out how I did it in this post here.

A quick project that I did, that didn’t cost any money was these apothecary jars and lids. (Sorry, for the slightly bad photos- for the top one I didn’t have my glasses on, so it is a bit out of focus. And the bottom one- I had no idea there was so much lint on the jars! 😉 Please ignore.) In the top photo you can see that the lids were chipping, so two quick coats of spray paint and they look good as new. While I was getting the paint for the lids, I had some sea glass spray paint in the garage too. So spur of the moment I decide to paint the outside of the jars too. I really like how they came out, such a subtle difference. And yet so refreshed and it cost no money just a bit of time!

Ok, now first let me tell you that this is NOT a reveal photo! This is the photo to show you where the plans started to take a U-Turn. Where I was second-guessing myself, and changing my mind, and ultimately the design plan. The original plan was to go with a modern graphics Black and White color story, with a pop of Teal and maybe a little bohemian flair. A clean, simple, and maybe a little monochromatic room. You can see my first post for the challenge with the plan here. You can also check out the post where I had done the shopping for the challenge over here.

Let’s take a step back in our story to the shopping and see if maybe the design was flawed from the start. On my way to go shopping for the Shower curtain, I had wanted a striped curtain that I had seen before. But when I got there, of course, they were all gone. Looking around I saw a different stripe and very graphic triangle pattern. Both were fun and pretty, and I liked them both but didn’t love either. So I sent a picture to the family and asked them to chose. All three of them said the triangles, so triangles it was! Until I hung the shower curtain with the triangles…

Now I have already stated that I hated the window curtains. Now I hated the shower curtain. Two of the main elements of my design plan, I hated. Time to think and shop online.

One thing I know about myself is that I like color, lots of colors. But I also wear a lot of Black and White in my clothing. That is why my choice for a Black and White color story for the Bathroom didn’t seem all that out there. I had just done all of my Christmas decorations with Black and White- which I LOVED! and I was feeling like I wanted to go more monochromatic with my overall design scheme. But it just didn’t work for me.

And you know what? That’s okay! I changed my mind, I knew I would eventually.

So where are we now? Well, I bought a new Shower curtain and I really LOVE it! A sneak peek is above. It has taken the design somewhere that I am very happy with and can’t wait to show you! I have also made another Window curtain, I don’t love it either, but at least I don’t hate it. Come back on January 31st for the full reveal! And see what all my other blogger friends have been working on below

  1. I feel your pain. I dress in almost all black, gray and navy, but when I try to decorate with a simpler palette, it feels off. Love the shower curtain choice. 🙂
