$100 Room Challenge-The Bathroom is Refreshed!

We made it! It is time to celebrate, I have completed my first $100 Room Challenge 🙂

I have been so happy to be taking part in this challenge, hosted by the lovely Erin of lemonslavendarandlaundry.com. Erin started the challenge a couple of years ago when she wanted to show that you could refresh a room on a small budget.  That anyone could redecorate One room, in One Month’s time, with a budget of only $100. A creative and thrifty contest to push one’s self. This challenge has grown this time and around 38 bloggers- including myself, took part! Check out all of the other participants completed projects at the end of this post.

I joined in the challenge in the second week, so I knew I should choose a small room to work on. I decided to freshen up our little Bathroom. A room that we all use and a refresh could really brighten it up!

Since we are renting our cute little house I had a simple plan to change up a few of the decorations to give the Bathroom a fresh new look. You can see how the Bathroom has been decorated in the past and what my original plan was this post: $100 Room Challenge- Am I too late? I don’t think so!

I made new artwork for the Bathroom. I really love the black and white pattern, and the frame was a lot easier to make than I thought. Check out my post on how I made this tile pattern framed piece of artwork for $1.50 here: $100 Room Challenge- DIY Stenciled Artwork

The old curtains in the Bathroom were not as light filtering as I wanted. I had a plan to make new curtains from a sheer panel and pom-pom trim- for the cost of $7.99. You can see how I did that and how I didn’t care for the results in the post: $100 Room Challenge- Pom-Pom Curtains.

The curtain panel above was made from the leftover fabric from both the sheer panel and scrap from the eyelet curtains that were hung in the bathroom before. No tutorial. This was a last-minute-change-late-night decision. And although I still don’t love the curtain panel, I don’t hate it like the Pom-Pom curtains. Oh well, live and learn and craft again!

I really like how my beaded and macrame garlands came out. Before I just had the one natural bead garland and some colorful Pom-Poms. I made a second wood bead garland, this time adding blue and green wood beads to the mix. I also made a macrame garland out of kitchen twine. Both of these were a no-cost addition to the Bathroom. Beads I had in my stash, and the Man hasn’t noticed that I took the twine from the kitchen. Not yet anyway.

A project that was not in the original plan was this Industrial shelf over the toilet. The Man and I decided to do it while out shopping at the hardware store.  It cost a bit more than I expected- $28.58. This was for all of the pipe components and the wood board. I spray painted the pipe components a black-brown, and the Man sanded and stain the board with both a gray and a pine stain.  A post with more details on this project is yet to come!

Another update no-cost project was these apothecary jars. I did a couple of new coats of touch up spray paint on the lids and then some sea glass spray paint on the jars themselves. You can see a side by side comparison in this post: $100 Room Challenge- What Happens When the Design Plan Changes?

The wood crate to hold the jars and the tissue is new. We found it for $9.99. The Man had seen it at the craft store and really wanted to add it to the design. This was not a purchase in the original plan, but we want to keep him happy! I really like the handles on the sides and the wash and worn look of the wood.

When I had started this challenge, I had a plan to go with a bold neutral color pallet. Black and White, Wood tones, with a pop of Teal. Well, once I started to put all of that together, it just didn’t feel right. I didn’t like it. At. All. What’s a girl to do? I went online and found some other options. I found this shower curtain at World Market (not a sponsored or affiliate post) and fell in love with it. The next night I went to my local store to see it in person, and knew it was the one!

The colors and the bold pattern was what really did it for me! The blues, greens, and gray and creamy white, with the bold pops of orange and red. It was what I should have gone with from the start. It felt right, it felt like me. I love it. Now every time I go in the bathroom, I touch and admire it. It has made me so happy that I changed the design plan.

Now this shower curtain does cost a bit more than the first one- $29.99. But I returned the first shower curtain which was $19.99 so that only put the budget up another $10. But wait, the project is not done, maybe we can find that $10 somewhere else.

One of the first projects I did for this Bathroom refresh was to do a deep clean of the Bathroom. I scrubbed down the whole room top to bottom. How does hair get on the ceiling? I cleaned out the medicine cabinet and the linen closet. While cleaning out the linens, I found this bathmat above, one that I had forgotten about at the very bottom of the closet. It is the same Teal color as the one I bought when I did the shopping for this project. Kind of funny that I chose a new bathmat in the same color of one I already owned. I don’t really need two teal bathmats. And the new one I had bought was $9.99. You know that could cover the extra cost of the new shower curtain so… Back to the store it went! Back on the budget we go!

I have had this little stool for a while, I had gotten it at an estate sale. It’s small and compact and I keep a galvanized bucket on top for the extra rolls of toilet paper. It has been a plain white since I’ve found it, so I had the Man sanded it down and I did a chevron stencil in a tan color on all the sides. Such a simple update, and one that again cost me nothing but a little time to do.

Well, that’s all the projects that I planned and completed. How about a look at way too many pictures of this tiny little Bathroom?

That is IT! I completed my first $100 Room Challenge! I was able to change up one room by the deadline of one month, but how did I do with the $100 budget? Let’s take a look,

  • Shower Curtain- $29.99
  • Window Curtains- $7.99
  • DIY Artwork- $1.50
  • Wood bead and macrame garlands- $0
  • Apothecary jars and lids refresh- $0
  • Wood stool update- $0
  • Deep Clean of the bathroom- $0
  • Bathmat- $0
  • Industrial Shelf- $28.58
  • Wood crate for the shelf- $9.99

Total- $78.05

Way under the $100 budget. And I’m so happy with how it all turned out. What do you think?
