Remember that time I said we were making over our bedroom?
During quarantine, I signed up to be a guest participant and take part in the One Room Challenge. It would be my third time for the challenge, and I was pretty excited. I had been planning on making over my bedroom for months and had even made a tiny bit of progress. But I needed some real motivation to complete it.
The One Room Challenge was that kick in the booty that I needed to start the project back up and make my finished Master Bedroom Makeover a reality. Or so I thought…
Just as I was starting my Master Bedroom Makeover– I got called to go back to work. Like most of the country- Michigan had been under a stay at home order and I didn’t know when I would be going back into work when I signed up for the challenge. What I thought was plenty of time to take on this one small room, in the end, was just too much for me. When I got the call that we were opening up just a small portion of our business, and since I live so close (less than a 5-minute drive)- would I be willing to go into work to support our team? Well, of course, I would! That is what leaders do, put others first.
Believing that there are bigger things than a room makeover going on, I did put the Master Bedroom Makeover back on hold again. It didn’t stop it completely, though. Whenever I had the time I worked on projects to bring this makeover a step or two closer to the finish line. I will be sharing these projects over the next week or so. Just because the One Room Challenge is over- Yup I missed the deadline– doesn’t mean I can’t share the work completed.
Raw Naked Wood Dressers
In the original plan to makeover our Master Bedroom I was going to update our old dressers into a Raw Wood Look. I have been seeing this trend for a few years and have just loved it. It has that raw-beachy-washed-bohemian look I’ve been hoping to achieve for our bedroom.
Upcycle an old dresser
We had these old pine dressers that were going to be just right for this project. All pine wood, medium color stain, no paint to strip, and overall in pretty good condition. Only one thing- I had never really liked them. They’re on the small side, so they don’t hold very much, and a little too short. Oh yeah, and there’s this decorative back piece to the top- that I really don’t like.
Time to look for another option.
Ikea Hacked Dresser
Deciding to look around for another option I did a lot of shopping online for an all-wood dresser. Which turned out to be harder than I thought. I also took to watching Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist every day for something to update. But I kept coming back to this Ikea Hemnes 3 drawer dresser. All pine wood, and very affordable. The only thing was that it didn’t come in an unfinished wood option.
Having an idea- I ordered the next best choice- two of these dressers in the White Stain finish.
Yes, you can make it your own
***First, let me apologize for not having more process photos. When I went to edit them, they were verrry blurrry. Oppps. Oh well…better luck next time!***
Once we received the Ikea Hemnes White Stained dressers- I took all of the boards and sanded off the white stain before I assembled them into the dressers. I used our belt sander with first a 60 grit sandpaper, which took about 98% of the stain off. Then followed with an 80 grit and then a 120 grit sandpaper. If you look closely at the photos above you can still see some of the white left behind. Just the look I was going for. I finished up with some Tounge Oil and clear wax to seal the finish.
Hardware, like Jewelry- makes a statement!
The Ikea dressers came with perfectly fine black metal knobs for the drawers. But many of the inspiration photos that I pinned to my Pinterest board had bin pull handles. Deciding that was the direction I wanted to take, I ended up ordering a set off Amazon and just love how they look!
Raw Wood Dressers- I love them!
It took me two full days of sanding, assembling, oiling, and waxing the two dressers. But I think that it was more than worth the time. Oh, and the bruised foot from dropping a piece of wood on it. Another Oppps.
Makeover Project Complete
How do you think they turned out? Do you like the Raw Wood trend? I am so happy with these Raw Wood Dressers- I might try it on another piece of furniture.
