Rae Dunn Pottery- what’s that all about?

White handcrafted pottery with tall skinny lettering. They have a handmade feel, but are produced and sold at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Home Goods.

Mugs, bowls, plates, dog and cat bowls, lidded canisters, butter dishes, etc…

Simply stated messages. Coffee, Tea, Thankful, Mine, Yours, Flour, Sugar, Butter, Spread, Cookies, Hey Girl, Let’s eat, Boss, Cereal, Sip, etc…

A couple of years ago I read about Rae Dunn and her pottery in a magazine. She is a artist who lives in San Francisco. She started out making and selling pottery out of her studio. After the media found her, she became very popular with decorators. So much so, now her style and goods are highly collectable! And of course, copied. Her pottery style fits into the whole white and neutral farmhouse decor that is so popular. Women are collecting just to decorate with her items. Women are also buying with the intent to resell her items. There are Instagram accounts that whole purpose is to resell her items.

I follow Rae Dunn on Instagram and as much as I like her goods, her sketches are what I really enjoy. She seems so down to earth, and truly talented and a little bemused with all the fuss of her “fame”. (This is just my observation, I have never met or had a conversation with her.) And she is a woman who loves her dog, Wilma. She wrote a book with her dog, you gotta love that! She is a creative, dog loving, jeans wearing kind of woman. She sounds like my kind of girl. I am truly a fan of her, not just the pottery.

I have bought a few pieces for Rae Dunn pottery. I don’t see it too often as I am more likely to go thrift shopping, but once in a while when I do to go TJ Maxx or Home Goods I will see and buy something. But the rule I have for myself is that I have to use it. I mostly have coffee mugs, but I also have a couple of plates, some cereal bowls, and a couple of lidded containers. I also have two dog bowls for the puppies to use, they say Slurp and Devour. Cute.

The first pieces of Rae Dunn I bought were four coffee mugs. I bought them for my boyfriend for Christmas last year. They said Mine, Yours, Love, and Hustle. I felt like they were words that spoke to my boyfriend and I, our relationship, and where we wanted to go. At the time, I didn’t even know what I had. I just liked the clean white pottery with the black lettering, so I bought them. It wasn’t until I started on Instagram and saw how these mugs were everywhere, that I learned what I had.

I will admit that I have participated in some hashtags that are aimed at Rae Dunn collectors. Just trying to fit in, I guess. I do enjoy the clean bold images and how they translate in photographs. And well, playing hashtags is kinda fun too.

I have made the joke that Rae Dunn pottery, is like Pokemon for adult Women. You know, “gotta catch them all!” I thought it was funny, but I might be the only one. Everyone has the right to collect what speaks to them. While I don’t consider myself a collector, I do have more than just a piece or two.

I am just a coffee drinking in my Rae Dunn mug, and posting a photo on Instagram kind of girl. I enjoy the clean bold images and how they translate in photographs. So, I will continue to buy what I see that I know I will use in my own home. And there’s a strong chance my collection will grow larger, and I won’t be too mad about it.

This is how I see the whole Rae Dunn pottery trend. Do you have any Rae Dunn? Do you have a collection? I would love to see what you have and how you style it!

PS- if you see a butter dish that says Spread, let me know! It is one piece that I would really like to have! Maybe I am a collector?!?
