DIY Mexican Painted Pottery

Hi There!

Since it is August, I better show you all the projects I have been working on this summer.
Project #1 DIY Mexican Painted Pottery

I am so proud of this little craft makeover!
Last year- I painted two pots for the Patio in the same style.
This year I will walk you through the steps on how I did it.

Remember this guy? I found him thrifting last summer.
Old, dirty, plastic, and only $1. My kind of guy.

But he had so much potential! Look at all the raised and recessed details, just asking to be painted.
Out came the spray paint for the base color. Two coats of paint and already looking better.

Next, I took craft paint and a craft brush and started on some of the details.

I always start with yellow, because it is not my favorite color. But I knew it was needed to balance out the other colors I wanted to use. And I know this is not a perfect paint job, and that is okay!

At this point I had only done one coat of the yellow, and then came in with the two blues.
I was trying out where I wanted each color. And blue is my favorite color!

Already I was loving the transformation. And I am not even half way done!
More of the two blues and then red came into to play.
And here he is with two coats of paint for each color.
I love all the primary colors!

The paint job is still not perfect. But after the next step it will look so much better.

Out came my black Sharpie stash! I used about 10 or 12 old Sharpies to fill in the lines of all the details. I used Sharpies instead of paint, just because it was so much easier.
Put the marker in the recessed line and rub. Then I sealed everything with a spray can of sealer.

It made all the colors really pop!

I did slip the marker once or twice. But I don’t mind- it is supposed to look hand painted, which it is.

Do you love it? I do.

Here he is all done, and dressed up with flowers.
For $1 and some time I have a one of a kind pot, that looks a lot more expensive.
You know I love that!
Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Hello Christine, Thanks so much for coming to my little spot on the internet. I’m glad that you enjoy my DIY Mexican/ Talavera Painted pots/ pottery. I used regular spray paint with a primer as the base, and craft paints you can buy at any craft store. Just be sure to let them dry completely in between coats and do a couple of coats with a clear sealer to protect your work. I hope that helps.
