$100 Dining Room Refresh

Week 4 of the $100 Room Challenge

We’re almost there! There is only one more week to the reveal of my $100 Room Challenge Dining Room refresh! I am really happy and think that it’s coming together quite nicely.

$100, One Room, One more Week!

Just in case you missed something, you can take a look back at my plan and progress below:

The $100 Room Challenge was started by the wonderful Erin of Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry. She started this with just one room in her home and has since opened it up to other bloggers. It is so fantastic all the spaces that everyone is taking on for just $100. Some are working on bedrooms, or hallways, entryways, laundries, bathrooms, and even closets. Be sure and check out what everyone is up to at the end of this post. You will find so much inspiration for your next project.

An Odd Built-In Re-Do

One of the projects I wanted to tackle with this makeover was this built-in. We have this odd little spot in our Dining Room with built-in shelves. The other side of this wall is facing the front door and at some point, it got boarded up. The all white space is only 3 and 1/2 inches deep.

A Nice Spot to Change up Decor

Every couple of months I switch up the decor in these built ins. It is a sweet little spot to add a bit of seasonal or holiday decor.

Add Fun and Texture

The white background of the built-ins is okay, but I am not one to leave anything alone for too long. I have backed this space with wrapping paper a few times since we moved into our little rental home. It is a quick and easy project to do, and very renter friendly. Just cut the wrapping paper to size and tape in place with rolled pieces of painters tape. So easy!

Birch Bark Paper

This Birch paper is a favorite. I found it during the Christmas holidays a couple of years ago, and I bought all 4 rolls of it that they had in the store. Using this Birch paper again was an option but I wanted to try something different.

Tone on Tone Pattern

I really like this Beige on Tan patterned wrapping paper. But as you can see in the photo above the paper is very thin and never was very smooth. You can see waves- and that bothered me for sure!

Wrapping Paper is so affordable!

I always pick up rolls of wrapping paper at a discount store like T J Maxx or Home Goods. They have wonderful rolls of wrapping paper for as little as $3 a roll. And I love that they carry plain and non-event type patterns. In my wrapping paper stash, I had this Brown craft paper, and the Gray and White stripe paper. I put up the Brown craft paper and liked the simplicity of the paper. But I felt it was just too dark.

Decisions, decisions…

Looking at the two papers- I had to make a decision. I really liked the striped paper, but I thought that it was a little too juvenile for the dining room. And the Brown paper was too dark. Should I use the Birch paper again? Or…

What if Fabric was an option?

Since I am trying to only use what I have in my craft stash for this makeover, I had to rethink what I was going to use for the back of the built in. I had already been making the curtains with drop cloth. A quick check to make sure that I had enough extra drop cloth, and I was cutting cardboard and drop cloth to put on the back of the built-in.

Cut, Wrap, and Tape

A no cost way to cover the backs of the built-ins was to cut cardboard to fit. I used cardboard, because that was what had on hand. But foam core board would have worked too. The fabric was cut to wrap over the sides to the back by 3+ inches, then taped in place with packing tape. Again- the tape I had on hand.

So easy!

Here the two bottom shelves have the backs covered with the drop cloth backs. You can see the color of the drop cloth is very subtle. It is just enough to add some interest. The top section has rolled pieces of tape ready for the last piece to be added. I cut the cardboard to fit pretty tight, just adding the extra tape to secure it.

Look at that texture!

Heres a close up of a drop cloth piece in place. You can see that it fits pretty good. I love the look and feel of drop cloth- it has so much texture. Almost like linen.

Another $0 project complete!

That’s one of the four projects I had planned for my $100 Room Challenge complete. We’re just a couple of days away from the BIG reveals! Now go and check out what everyone else has been doing this week below!
