Using Fun Decor on the Front Porch

To lift my mood, I decorated the front porch with a few fun decor pieces and colors!

Bright and fun vibes on the front porch!
Decorating the front porch is one of my favorites things to do! Why not make it fun!

The world we are living in today has been usual for sure. I see so much posted on social media on how stressed and anxious everyone is feeling. I have been doing my best every day to be positive. I’m changing my perspective and being grateful for this time together and what we have. I hope that you are able to do the same. We’re all in this together.

To make the most of my time at home I turned my attention to bringing some fun into my home decorating. We all need a little fun, after all, it’s the little things that are keeping us going now for sure. In order to lift my mood and the mood of all of the neighbors walking by our home, I decided to take a fun retro approach to my front porch decor.

A 60s Vibe- A VW Bus and Beetle

My bright and fun Front Porch!
I have a thing for VW Beetles and Buses. This yellow VW Bus was a garage sale find.

As a kid growing up in the 70s I just loved VW Beetles, or Slug Bugs as we called them. Quickly followed with a swift sock to the arm whenever one was driving by. VW’s have such a fun retro vibe- beachy and carefree.

When I was a teenager in the 80s I had a boyfriend who drove a dark green VW Beetle. It was such a junker he was always working on it- as it had trouble starting most of the time. And the interior was a disaster! The seats were taped together with duct tape, and the floor had a piece of metal roof sheeting to keep the rain and snow out. All of that just didn’t matter to me, I loved that car so much. I have great memories of driving around in that car.

We found this fun red metal VW Beetle at a vintage craft market. It’s pretty big and heavy.

In 1998 Volkswagen reintroduced the Beetle. And the public went crazy! Including me. The New Beetles were everywhere. Oh boy, did I want one! We put our name on a list at the dealership and were told that it could take months for a New Beetle to become available. Well, wouldn’t you know it- three days later we got the call that a manual Bright Blue Beetle had fallen through the list and it could be ours if we were still interested. Long story short- I drove that car for 15 years. I loved that car so much, I regret giving it up.

The yellow VW Bus was just the start of this bright and fun porch!

Wanting to use the yellow VW Bus and the red VW Beetle metal art pieces, I knew I should bring in other fun colors to help balance them out. This little vintage orange Tonka Truck was a must to add. It was an excellent addition to the vehicle theme of the decor. Looking to add another orange element- I pulled all of these terra cotta pots from the garage. The orange of the terra cotta pots helps keep the orange color flow throughout the front porch decor. And of course, I had to use my favorite garden Gnome who is on the other side of the table and has the most beautiful turquoise color.

Who doesn’t like a little camper?

A Camper Birdhouse
How cute is this little Camper Birdhouse? I love all of the silver galvanized details.

I have had this little Camper Birdhouse for a couple of years. While I think they have been kind of a kitschy decor trend- I still really love this little guy. And might not mind getting a big one for me to play around with and decorate. One day…

This white with yellow flowers picnic basket is from Ikea last year. The pops of the yellow tie in with the VW Bus. I filled the picnic basket with faux greenery and fun faux yellow flowers.

An old olive oil bottle painted a fun turquoise and a bright yellow bird planter adds more color to the scene. Isn’t his face just the sweetest thing?

A couple tips for Fun Decorating

A bright and fun Front Porch decor
All of these colors are a fun and bright spot during these gray cloudy days here in Michigan.

Here’s a couple of tips on how I keep my Front Porch decor FUN:

  • Choose a theme- This time around I went with my vintage toy vehicles and VW wall art. How can toys not be fun?
  • Choose a color story- I chose a mix of colors that were all the same tone or intensity. Mixing both hot (yellow, orange, and red) with cool (blue and green) colors across both sides of the porch- gives almost a rainbow effect.
  • Shop your home for decor- I pulled items from my stash in the garage and basement. Then mixed them together until I liked the way they looked.
  • Keep it from getting too juvenile- To make sure the decor stayed fun and not childish- I used multiple lanterns and terra cotta pots.
  • You can always change it- If you’re not sure if it’s working- live with it for a day or two and then change whatever doesn’t suit you.
  • Have fun!- It’s your home. Show your humor and have fun with it!
Fun Front Porch Decorating
While this cement front porch is not my favorite element of our little rental house- it is a nice place to decorate for each season. It’s big enough to decorate both sides of the front door and keep it interesting to look at.

Useful and Fun Decor!

On this side of the front door, I always put a little landing spot for my bags. It’s nice to have a spot as I unlock the front door. This little table and chair work great! The little orange chair was a roadside find that I cleaned up and painted a couple of years ago.

I can’t get over how cute this tiny little yellow Tonka Dump truck is!
A couple of wood slabs are used to give a small Tonka Truck some height. That way he wouldn’t get lost among the other decor.

  1. I can totally see you driving a VW Beetle! I wanted one {yellow!} so bad when I was in college and was so jealous when one of my friends bought one! 🙂 I love all of the bright colors on your porch – it’s definitely cheerful!
