I just love Farmhouse signs.
They can be simply made, and are usually painted. They can be one or two word on the sign. They can be used for your front porch, and say “Welcome”. They can be used for holiday decorating, and say “Joy”. These fun signs can be any color or size to fit your style and decor. The possibilities are endless.
I wanted to make a sign for my kitchen. I thought about words and short phrases, but didn’t love any one thing. The words “Kitchen” and “eat” seemed over done to me. What was my word? What fit our home and family? I must have thought about it for a year. ( This was a project that I wanted to do, and was willing to wait until the inspiration was right!) Then it came to me. It was the perfect word for US. Perfect for how we live, and who we are.
Taqueria
Huh? Or what is that? You might ask.
A Taqueria is a place where tacos, burritos, and other Mexican foods are made (and sold). My boyfriend is Mexican, and does most of the cooking in our house. But even before he and I got together, my kids and I loved all types of Mexican foods. I will admit that we can have tacos 2 to 4 times a week. Sometimes tacos for dinner, and sometimes tacos for breakfast. Thats what is so great about Tacos- you can put whatever you want in them. We love them.
On to the sign, and how I made it. On a budget.
I bought there letters for $1.50 each. You can get them at most craft stores, in many different sizes and fonts. I then simply painted them with silver spray paint. Quick and easy. Boom!
We had this board left over from another project. This board had been painted a couple of times, so my boyfriend agreed to sand it down before I painted it again.
He also sanded and rounded out all of the edges of the board.
It was when he got to this point, I said to STOP!
I loved the natural wood showing through the purple and the turquoise paints. I loved the grain and the knots in the wood. It was great, so I changed my plans of painting the board black.
To darken it and give it more depth, we stained the board with a dark walnut stain. Again, I love it! The grain, and knots showing through the paints. It was too good to cover up. So, I didn’t!
Here is the sign after I glued the letters in place. I love the silver color of the letters. I planned to make them look a bit like galvanized metal, with some black dry brushing. But again I changed my mind and loved how they stood out against the purple-turquoise-stained background of the wood board. Happy Accidents happen with DIY projects!
Here it is in the kitchen above our sink. Too cute, and pretty! It is the sign I didn’t even know I wanted. Going into the project I had a different plan, metal letters on a black board. I am so happy with how it turned out.
I only spent many on the letters for this project- 8 letters at a $1.50 = $12
The wood board I had, as well as all of the paints. I even had the “d-ring” hangers to put on the back from my stash.
What do you think?
Do you have a Farmhouse sign?
What is your word?
Thanks for stopping by!
