An easy upcycle for thrift store pottery- Paper Napkin Decoupage
I am back with another fun and easy DIY craft project. A thrift store upcycle project- a Paper Napkin Decoupage pitcher. It was so fun, easy, and quick- that I made the whole project on the living room coffee table while watching tv!
Another DIY Craft Blog Hop
My sweet friends Ashlee and Liz are joining me for this DIY Craft project blog hop. Make sure to check out their projects at the bottom of this post!
Red and Green Striped Pitcher
I had this cute thrift store pitcher in my stash. I loved the shape but the red and green stripes were just a little too Christmas-y for my home decor.
White Spray Paint
An easy fix for changing the colors of the pitcher was to spray paint it. Out came a pretty creamy white color spray paint, and a couple of thin coats later the red and green stripes were gone. As you can see on the photo on the right, the striped texture was still visible. Which was fine but I thought the pitcher could be so much more!
Bold Pretty Paper Napkins
Out came these pretty black with white abstract Poppy flower napkins. These are based on a fabric pattern by the Finnish design company Marimekko. The fabric and women’s dress manufacture was founded in the early 1950s by a husband and wife team. Their clothing was very popular with the pop culture of the 1960s. In fact, Jackie Kennedy bought eight of their dresses to wear during the 1960 presidential campaign of JFK.
I have always been drawn to Marimekko’s bright colors and bold graphic designs. I have a few packs of these bold pretty paper napkins in my stash for entertaining and crafts.
And as it happens- I am half Finnish. 🙂
Prepare the Paper Napkins
To prepare the paper napkins for decoupage- I pulled the plain white sheet off the back of the paper napkin. The extra layer is not needed, and I don’t want the extra bulk for my project. This makes the paper napkin thinner and easier to wrap around your object.
Glue and Press On Paper Napkin
To start off I use a small paintbrush to spread the Mod Podge over the whole pitcher. Then I carefully pressed the paper napkin into the glue- wrapping it around the pitcher. I cut and pulled apart more napkins until the entire pitcher was covered. I was sure to cover the handle and the lip of the pitcher too!
Once I was happy with the paper napkin coverage- I then took my paintbrush and added another layer of the Mod Podge over the top of the paper napkins. This was to make sure everything was pressed down, smoothed out- the best I could, and sealed. I then let it dry for 24 hours.
Paper Napkin Decoupage
I really love the way that my DIY craft Paper Napkin Decoupage pitcher turned out. It was a great project that was pretty easy to do. You could do this to so many different thrift store items- pottery, boxes, trays, picture frames, and even furniture too. Can you imagine a chair covered in these pretty paper napkins? I might have to do that one! And the most fun part would be picking out which Paper Napkins to use!
