Taking one step closer to see if I can get this blogging thing going- I am taking part in a blogger challenge- The One Room Challenge.
What is the ORC, you ask? It is a six-week design challenge featuring 20 interior designers and over 200 guest participants. Each one is challenged to makeover one room or space, all collectively posting once a week over at the One Room Challenge website.
I am lucky enough to be one of the Guest Participants. Be sure to check out all of the great projects my fellow DIY bloggers are tackling! Bedrooms, Laundry, Kitchens, and Bathrooms- there is inspiration for whatever project you’re looking to complete.
You can also see photos from all of the Participants that are posted on Instagram using the hashtag #oneroomchallenge

This week I am going to go into some details of the budget and where we spent our money. The original plan had been to keep it under $300. Well, let’s take a look at how some of the money has been spent.
The layout and all of the big pieces are in place. Now we are just working on the details, and I am pretty happy with how the Patio makeover is coming along. We have been able to work on other spaces around the backyard as well. As I said last week our makeover space has grown from just the Patio to other spaces around the yard too.
I worked on this outdoor gallery wall this week. All of the frames I already had, you can see my original posts about outdoor gallery walls here and here. The three metal chair frames were found in the garden when we moved into our cute little rental house. I bought a $5 can of spray paint to freshen them up and made seats/ shelves from pallet wood. The pansies were a full flat from Lowes for $12, that I divided up to put in these cute wire baskets with coco liners- all of which I reused from last year. I found the three smaller Flamingos from the dollar store to add a bit more color to the garden before the flowers bloom.
I love Talavera Mexican painted pottery, but it can be so expensive! I found this plastic pot while out garage sale-ing a few years ago. I spray painted it black and then went into the details with colorful Sharpie paint pens. The pens were $11, but so worth it! It made painting the details so much easier. I love a good DIY that can upcycle a discarded item and give it new life. Another pot that I painted is in the background and you can see a step by step post to DIY your own DIY Mexican painted pottery here!
This week we also worked on the firepit platform. We bought the 4 gray stones for $1.32 each. All of the red bricks were found on the property when we moved in, they’re extras from when the former owner put in the edging around the flower beds. Now we just need to add some paving sand to fill in the cracks.
We found this three-shelf table last year for free by a dumpster and we need a potting bench. Perfect! So, I painted the three-shelf table with a $3 can of miss-tint paint from the hardware store. I love this dark charcoal grey color, and the paint was an exterior blend. Win-Win!!
The potted flowers on top were in the reduced section of the garden center for $3 each. They came in the purple pots, that I kinda love for my colorful outdoor space this year. The purple is such a great color!
But mostly I wanted to share this photo for the super cute photo bomber in the screen door! Hi Pepe!
I am so happy with this outdoor rug we found at World Market. It’s the 6′ x 9′ Medina Reversible Indoor Outdoor Rio Mat. The original cost is $39.99, but we were able to get it when they were having a sale a few weeks ago. And I used my Explorer Rewards membership for an extra discount- so my cost ended up being $27!!! An excellent price and it adds so many colors to the space. Win-Win again!
Looking to expand our seating for the Patio I found these two dark wicker chairs that came with the beige /tan cushions and a matching table (not shown in this photo) for $40 on Craigslist. They were from a student who was moving back home out of state. They’re in almost new condition and match all of the other outdoor furniture. And comfy too.
This 4′ x 6′ mat was found at a craft store on sale for $15. My son picked out the bright green stripe, and I just love the added color and pattern it has added to our space.
The white rolling coffee table also was a thrifted find, and in fact, I got two! The two tables were only $30 and also found on Craigslist- from another Student moving home. Brand new, barely used and for really great prices! I love thrifting!
In our original plan, I talked about possibly replacing our old grill. Well, we did! This guy was $99. My Man decided that the old grill was just too far gone, and we could just get a very basic grill to get us through the next couple of years. If he is happy, then I am happy!
I cleared out a new spot for it to sit on. We bought 8 more $1.32 grey stones and filled out the space with more red bricks. They have only been dry fitted for the space and pattern, we still need paving sand to level them out.
The three hanging plants were found for $6 each and will be put in ceramic pots later. It’s a trick I have used for years! Hanging pots can be found for less sometimes, I just remove them from the plastic and add them to pots I already own. So easy!
This sweet little white and pink Flamingo pillow was found at Target in the Dollar Spot for $5. I also found a Flamingo watering can, and two cement canisters that I have put plants in. Each were $5 at the Dollar Spot.
This cute little alligator was refreshed with the Sharpie paint pens. He has been a fixture on my Patio for years and he had really gotten faded! A quick couple of coats of spray paint, then doodle out the details with the Sharpie pens. Now He is as good as new!
Now my last BIG purchase is this REAL Talavera Painted Pot. I was able to find it for $15 and I just snapped it up! I had to 😉
Be sure to come back next week for the final revel of our One Room Challenge- the Patio!
