Hi There! Welcome back, I’m so glad that you’re here 🙂
I am working once again with the lovely Ashlee of Sweet Southern Oaks and Liz of Living with Liz for another DIY project! This time around we are working with the theme of Plants! We have each taken our own twist on this theme- as is always the fun part! Be sure and check out at the bottom of this post to go to Ashlee and Liz‘s projects- you won’t be disappointed!
As for me and my project, well…. you know I love a good DIY!
Is your dream decor item out of budget? Then why not DIY!
Authentic Talavera Pottery
Authentic Talavera Painted Pots or pottery is traditionally hand-made and painted in Mexico and Spain. This type of pottery is full of color and pattern. Which I love! But for the real thing- it can get pretty pricey.
I do have a small collection of the real deal that I was able to find at Home Goods and TJ Maxx. These two planters were each just under $15- which I think is still kind of a lot for a planter. The small pot and mug were just under $10. I will continue to buy more as I can fit it into my budget.
But until then- what’s a thrifty/ diy girl to do?
How could I get pricey pottery on a thrift store budget?
Then I had this idea. It always starts like that…
When we first moved into our cute little rental house I wanted bright and colorful painted planters for the patio. But I also needed to keep things in the budget so I decided to try and paint my own Mexican Painted Pottery.
As I was in the garage one day- I saw these old foam molded pots that I had a summer or two before- painted Navy Blue. And I thought- “well, that has a pattern. Most of the hard work is done! Maybe I could paint these into the style of the Talavera Mexican pottery I want.”
Using the Blue as the base color, I then used craft paints to color in all of the other details. Then when I was completely finished I went back in and using a Sharpie marker outlined all of those details. This gave the colors and pattern more depth. It was just the look I was going for! Love it!
You can see one of my very first blog posts from 2014 where I wrote about the project here- DIY Painted Pottery I just reread it- it’s not too bad!
Pot Number 2- Purple Sky
Purple and Sky Blue are not Traditional Talavera colors
This is the second pot that I painted that summer in 2014. It was part of a set I had bought at a garage sale. It was old and dirty, so I painted the pot Purple. While Purple is not a traditional color for Talavera Mexican pots- it is a favorite color of mine. I thought that it made a nice base color for this DIY Talavera combination that I came up with my other craft paints. Purple, Sky Blue, Lime Green, Bright Yellow, and Hot Pink. Even though it’s not a traditional color combination- I still think it works.
And More Pots Followed
My first step by step blog post
The summer of 2015 I painted another plastic pot I had found at another garage sale. This time I showed all of the steps I took to transform a plain pot into this bright and colorful Talavera Painted Pot. Using just craft paint and a Sharpie! It is still an all time favorite of mine. The pattern is just perfect for this type of crafted pottery style.

A Fun and Simple Craft Project
Every summer has brought more pots home to paint!
Each new spring and summer garage sale season since has brought more plastic pots home to be up-cycled into DIY Talavera Painted Pottery.
Every time I start by painting the pot one strong base color and then going into coloring the details with craft paint. It’s a fun project that really takes no skill- trust me! The work has been done for you with the molded details.
Make it even easier on yourself! Grab some Sharpie Paint Pens for those details!
This Blue, White and Yellow pot that I painted last summer- I used Sharpie Paint Pens for all of the details. It made this simple project even easier! Believe me- you too can paint your own DIY Talavera Painted Pot or Pottery.
This Summer’s New Addition to the Crew
This is the Baby Brother to Pot #1
This summer’s DIY Talavera Painted pot is the same style as the very first pot that I painted in 2014. It is just a smaller size. I decided for this smaller brother pot I would not copy the color combination exactly- just keep it similar. A Blue base, with Yellow and Red and Green details. This time I took a White Sharpie Paint Pen and gave this pot even more details with hand drawn dots and lines. I really like the added detail that it gives.
What do you think?
Pretty good fakes if you ask me! It’s amazing to me how just some paint and time can transform a simple plastic pot and make it look expensive.
