I love Mexican painted pottery. I love the colors. I love the detail of it. So pretty.
I don’t love the price. A small flower pot can be $30. Even if I go to Home Goods or TJ Max, it’s still at least $20. I don’t want to spend that much on one pot. Too many things I can get second hand for that much money.
So, I kept looking at it online and dreaming. Then I was in the garage, and saw some old pots I have. They are the foam molded kind to look like stone. I used to have about 8 of these. All of them had been spray painted at point or another. I sold a few in a garage sale when we were moving. How I wish now I had kept them. Live and learn. And look for them second hand.
This pot on the left was originally a light gray stone color. I had two larger ones, and this small one. They sat on the steps of my old house. I loved them, but got tired of them. I wanted the cobalt blue ones on the right. I love that color. Look at the wash of color on that pot. Beautiful.
The more blue pots I got, the more the gray color didn’t work. So, I painted it. Surprise! And I painted it blue. It was still blue when I pulled it from the garage. I googled some images of painted pottery and got out my craft paints. I painted all the details different colors. Then I did some wash of colors on the different backgrounds. It took a few coats, and I LOVED it. But it need more depth. So I took out my favorite Sharpie and outlined all the details. So in LOVE. Where have you been all my life? Kind of love.
The pot on left was a part of a set of three I got at a garage sale. They were $1 each, so I had to get the set right? He was a bit more brown than gray when I got him. I painted them all purple. That was the summer I was starting to tire of the cobalt blue. The purple was to mix in for another pop of color. Again craft paints on the details, then I took a Sharpie to give them depth. Love, love, love it!
I put white flowers in the painted pots to make sure the colors really pop! All my other flower pots have a mix of orange, pink and purple flowers. You will get to see the rest of those soon.
I think it is a really good fake. A DIY painted pottery pot, that saved me some money. Oh boy, I just noticed an orange circle that didn’t get Sharpied. I will need to fix that!
LOVE
Purple is not a traditional color for Mexican pottery, but it looks so good with the green and blue. Don’t you think?
It took me two days to paint two pots. But I think it was worth the time. I wish I had those other pots, but for now these two are my new loves.
Do you like painted pottery? Would you have just spent the money? Or the time?
