DIY Art for the Patio

Hi There, how are you? Thanks for stopping by.

Today I have another piece of DIY artwork to show you.

Last summer 2015, I made this herringbone pattern on a wine crate lid. I used wood shims from the hardware store cut into small pieces and glued them down with wood glue.

I liked all of the different tones in the wood shims. But it just wasn’t feeling like it was done, ya know? So, out came the paints…

I decided to use blues, greens and purples. As I painted each color, I would try and put it randomly on  an odd number of pieces. I also tried to have the color on pieces that were going in different directions.

Here it is all filled in and complete. I love the mix of blues, I think I used 6 or 7 different ones. But something was still off…

It still felt flat. So, I let it sit for a day or two.

That happens to me sometimes. If a project isn’t going how I thought, I put it aside for a little bit. That might be a day or two, or a year. You never know.

I love craft paints, and I thought it would be fun to show you how the rest of the table looked while painting. A paper plate to put the paint on, and a take out container to rise the paint brush in water. And a plain piece of cardboard under it all to protect my dining room table while I paint.

Here it is complete, hanging on the side of the garage. You will see that the Quilt pattern art work is also hanging here.

To finish the wood shim project, I ended up sanding it down just a little. To show some of the wood through the paint. I then drilled two holes at the top and made a twine hanger to hang it from.

An up close look. I love the colors, and the pattern.

For the twine hanger, I took three strands and braided them. Then strung them through the holes at the top, and tied a knot. I thought that just three strands wasn’t enough and cut and tied three more to give it more presence.

There you go, some DIY art work. I hung the art over this little two seater on the patio. I wanted to brighten up the space just a little, more color and more pattern. Cute huh?

Thanks for stopping by!
