You know those plastic Pink Flamingos? You know which ones.
Are they tacky? Or are they cool?
Either way-
I don’t care, because I love them!
I have always loved Pink Flamingos. That’s right- those artificial, way too bright, pink plastic, some call them tacky- yard flamingos. I have always loved how they look, and just everything about them. They recall of simpler times when summer traveling was going to the beach, wearing hats, and drinking cocktails with little umbrellas. Doesn’t that sound like fun?
I can remember as a young girl, asking my mother if we could get some for our yard. I wanted our house to be fun and carefree. And what I thought was very stylish.
The answer was of course- no. My mother didn’t like them.
That’s ok- I got my Pink Flamingos anyway.
Flamingos in Flowers
As a young woman with her first car- I had a Pink Flamingo that sat in the backseat window behind the driver’s seat. A good friend gave her to me for my birthday and I named her Fran. Fran the Flamingo.
I kinda miss Fran, and I wonder where she went.
When my daughter was young and small- we surrounded her backyard playhouse with Pink Flamingos. I had found these little locking flamingos that formed a little garden fence. It was so super cute. And my daughter loved them because they were pink.
I loved them because they were Pink Flamingos!
Pink, Gold, and Tropical Ferns
While living at the same house, we had a neighbor who told me that Pink Flamingos were tacky and she hated them. I mean- she hated them!!!
That just made me go out and find as many flamingos as I could. I filled all of my flower pots with them. They were in the pots and the garden beds, and around my daughter’s playhouse. My yard was full of bright Pink Flamingos. We never talked about Pink Flamingos again.
Pink Flamingos have been around for more than 60 years!
Did you know that Lawn Flamingos were designed in 1957? By an art school graduate named Don Featherstone. It was just his second design that he had done for the company Union Products. Who knew that a 21-year-old in 1957- would design something that would still be a part of how we decorate our yards today.
Pink Flamingos were popular in an era that embraced pink, turquoise, butter yellow, and mint green in all aspects of home decor. Including sinks, countertops, tubs, and toilets. Can you imagine that showroom?
You can still buy Featherstone Flamingos on Amazon.

How stinking cute. I remember these plastic flamingos. My mom had some in her back yard by our pool in Florida. I just can’t get over the watering cans. Love them so much. Your placement on everything is gorgeous.
