Hello. Happy Fall.
I haven’t been around, so lets just jump right in!
I had this succulent that was getting really tall and leggy. So tall, that it was falling over the side of the planter it was in. He was also growing Flower/ Plant babies off his trunk and out of his roots. I researched and found out that succulents will do that because they are not getting enough sun. Well baby, we live in Michigan. We all don’t always have enough sun 😉 What to do with the Tall/ Leggy guy now? Propagate and make new Succulent plant babies!!!
Back in August, I pulled all the leaves or petals off the Tall/Leggy Succulent and cut off all the baby Flower/ Plant/ Stems off the plant. I read that the petals and stems needed to callus over in order to grown new roots. I placed them all on a bed of river rocks and Sea glass and glass beads. Over the next couple of weeks I left them in the sun, and sprayed them with water daily.
I am sorry to report that all of the Petals dried up and died. But the Flower/ Plant babies grew roots!!! Success!
Once the roots were substantial enough, I knew it was time to repot. This is about 4 to 5 weeks after the initial cutting.
I used thrifted glass jar that was missing it’s lid. The bottom has a mix of new aquarium rocks, charcoal, and perlite. I also place some glass beads, flat side against the jar side.
I then made a mix of Succulent and Cactus soil with A House plant soil that had built in fertilizer. Its important for Succulents to have a dry soil, as they only need to be watered after their soil has dried out completely. Then it was time to add the Succulent babies with the sea glass and beads on top. I gave them a good watering and let them sit in the sun. Easy Peasy!
I’m so happy with how this little project came out!
I saved a Plant from the compost. I used thrifted finds, the only new items that I bought were Aquarium rocks and soil. Time was simple and short. The first day with the cutting of the tall plant, was maybe 30-40 minutes. Then water everyday. Then another 30-40 minutes to replant in the glass jar.
Have you tried to propagate before? I would love to know how you did it, and how it turned out! Thanks for stopping by!
