A No Spend Patio Refresh

Spring is here! Now it’s time for an old fashioned spring cleanup and a no spend Patio Refresh.

I am once again joining my friends Ashlee and Liz for another Sweet Link Up blog hop. This time around we are each tackling an outdoor space. I’m going to share with you how I have been working on a backyard Patio Refresh without spending any money!

Be sure to check out Ashlee and Liz‘s outdoor themed posts at the bottom of this one!

Backyard Patio refresh using what we have on hand
Our backyard No Spend Patio Refresh

After the winter holidays, I always start dreaming about warmer weather and how to decorate the backyard patio each year. I cuddle up on the couch and peruse Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration. This year I have been drawn to black and white bohemian style patios and backyards.

Then I couldn’t wait to get out there and get to work. Well, with all that has been happening in the world and since we are all spending more time at home- I decided to take full advantage and do a full backyard spring cleanup. It was a lot of work, but our yard has never looked so good! Once all the cleanup was done, it was now time I turned my attention to doing a No Spend Patio Refresh– using just the items that we already own.

A Gray Galvanized Metal Collection

Backyard Patio using black, white, and gray items.
Using my collection of galvanized metals- buckets and pails galore!

Over the years I have collected a pretty large collection of galvanized metal items. A few trays, buckets, pails, lanterns, and a couple of stools. Many have been found while out thrifting- at garage sales and thrift stores. A couple of items were bought brand new, but still on a budget. When you love something like I do with galvanized metal- you’re drawn to it while out shopping.

Gray Galvanized Metal Flowers
A great find from TJ Maxx

These galvanized metal flowers were a fun find at TJ Maxx a couple of years ago. They’re such a fun element that adds a big impact to the side of the garage.

Hanging wall decor outside makes an outdoor space feel more like an inside room.

Outdoor cart filled with buckets and pots on the Patio

This cute black metal tea-cart was bought from a friend. It needs a back wheel repair, but until then it holds more galvanized pots and buckets. We’re not able to go plant shopping just yet, but when we can these will all be filled with bright pretty greenery.

Galvanized pots and a couple of plants on the Patio
Just a couple of Twisted Rush plants in galvanized buckets – that’s all the plants we have for now. A bunch of Red Dogwood twigs left over from my winter holiday pots placed in a clear glass cookie jar. A small dash of color that will have to hold me for now.
A garage sale watering can- spray-painted black, a Target Bullseye gray and gold watering can- bought while on half-off discount, and an aged brown terra cotta pot filled with moss from the backyard. The moss didn’t cost anything- I just wish that it would have lasted longer.
The best vignettes are made pretty with three simple items- the power of 3!
DIY Barn Quilt on the Patio
A black and white DIY Painted Barn Quilt is the center of the Patio Refresh

My pallet DIY Painted Barn Quilt is still one of my favorite projects to date! It’s kinda big and very heavy- so I just placed it on top of the table to give some height to the outdoor space.

Patio Refresh with out spending a penny!
The washed worn wood of this table and the crates on the ground have such amazing color. That perfect driftwood gray color. I love it!
The table and crates were a free-by-the-side-of-the-road find- another thing that I love- free!

Stay and Sit a while…

The sitting area on our Patio Refresh
This side of the Patio Refresh is our sitting area. A few comfy chairs and a couple of tables to put your feet up are all that is needed to make this a cozy space.
We have been having our coffee out here in the mornings. It’s been just lovely.
These all-weather wicker chairs are so comfortable and pretty too. They’re a little bit Farmhouse and a little bit Boho. Just perfect for my mix and make it work style!
The chairs were from Target a couple of years ago, sadly no longer available.
Our dog Pepe on the Patio chair
Pepe loves having the chairs on the Patio. He can jump up and see the whole backyard.
I just love this handsome boy!

Pepe loves being with me while I take photos- the cutest photo bomber ever!

The Dining Space

Patio Refresh - Dining space
I love our dining table and chairs on the patio. The table was a Craigslist find for just $40. And the chairs are from the Better Homes and Gardens line at Walmart last year. I love the black and white bistro style woven seats- just beautiful.
We’re still in need for two more chairs to head up the table at either end. I would like to find some that are similar, but have enough contrast to make it interesting.
Black, White and Gray Patio Refresh
I can’t wait to start grilling and sitting out here for meals!

My friend Liz’s Man had a near-miss accident with the deck floor of the house they are renovating. He’s okay- thank goodness! They redid the deck floor and now it looks amazing! Check out the details on her blog here- Living with Liz– The Deck Debacle.

  1. You have a great collection of galvanized metal! Those flowers are so cool and I’m crushing on those chairs. This looks like the perfect spot for coffee!

  2. Furry photo bombers are my favorite! I love how you’ve used your outdoor space – it’s got space for everything you need!
