Really cute Patriotic Flag decor made simply with ribbon and hot glue
Who loves a super quick and cute craft? If you’re looking to bring a little fun to your Patriotic 4th of July decor- then I have just the craft for you!
Psst- it’s flags!
Love that Red, White, and Blue!
I’m back with my sweet friends Ashlee and Liz this month for another blog hop. This month we have a Patriotic theme to help get you ready for your 4th of July decorating!
This month we have a special guest blogger hanging with us! I am so excited to have Shanna of Our Military Home Front for this month’s blog hop! Please make sure to check out her project over on her blog. And, of course, go and follow her on Instagram too! @our_military_home_front
Start with your favorite Ribbons
To start my patriotic ribbon craft projects- I chose a mix of pretty ribbons in simple patterns within the Red, White, and Blue color story.
Stars, checks, dots, and lace- each pretty on their own, but together? Kinda sweet and cool all at once. And very patriotic!
What to build my Ribbon Flag on?
A short trip to the Dollar Tree led me to these cute shadow box art pieces. These were absolutely fine on their own with their sweet messages, but I saw they could be something else too! Time for a DIY craft hack!
I pulled the cardboard pieces that held the sayings out and then was left with basic shadow box frames. Most of the cute shiplap background was still intact.
A quick fix- paint!
Using a simple creamy white craft paint, I covered the ripped spot of cardboard. That way the dark brown of the cardboard wouldn’t show through the ribbons.
Time to cut those ribbons.
This can be the scary part- cutting the ribbon. What if I make the wrong choice? Cut them too short? Or too long?
Well, I say- Just cut the ribbon! It’s crafting and its supposed to be fun!!!
My shadow box frames are 5-inch square. Taking that measurement in my mind, I knew my flag should be at most a 4-inch square- that would leave a half-inch border all around the flag within the shadow box.
Using my cutting mat I laid out the cut strips of ribbons to get the flag fitted before I glued it all down into the shadow box. It also helped to use the mat as a visual to cut the ribbons to the right sizes.
Heat up your glue gun
I found that it was easier to glue a straight line of the hot glue directly into the shadow box, and then lay the ribbon on top. I started at the bottom and went up from there until the flag was formed.
And just like that…
There you have it! Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy!
Don’t have a shadow box frame?
You don’t have a shadow box frame for your ribbon flag to be made on- how about a canvas? Or you could use scrap wood. Or the inside of a picture frame. Or foam core board. Get creative!
Then just use my simple steps to place the ribbons on whatever your base you chose to build your own ribbon flags on. Get your craft on!
Ribbon crafting is fun!
I just love how simple this craft is- and so budget friendly too. You may already have supplies in your own craft stash!

This is such a great idea, Jackie! I love how you listed other ideas to create the ribbon flag, too. This is so festive for the 4th!
I just love these. I need to shop at the dollar general or dollar tree more often. You and Ashlee both made some very budget friendly decor.
I love re-purposing the dollar store shadow box! Definitely going to keep an eye out for some of those next time I’m in the dollar store!
Thats such a cute flag project. I love shadow boxes too.
