Fall Decorating with Cutting Boards

Or how I decorated my built-in shelf with a collection of old cutting boards and brown glass bottles.

Welcome! If this is your first time visiting- it’s so good to have you here. I am Jackie of Jackie Can’t Blog. I am back with the ladies of the Sweet Moda Blog Link Up. We get together every couple of weeks for a blog hop. This time around we are all decorating our homes for Fall. If you love farmhouse decor- my good friend Ashlee of Sweet Southern Oaks has got some pretty inspiration for you. Are you a collected eclectic soul? My sweet friend Liz of Living With Liz will show you the way. Let’s started.

This weeks theme: Fall Decor

What could be warmer than worn wood cutting boards?

For Fall I always like to use warm wood colors and textures. I think when the weather starts to cool down we are all naturally drawn to colors that remind us of being warm and cozy. Warm caramel and dark chocolate browns are a logical choice for me. Wood cutting boards and brown glass bottles- perfect!

I’ve had this idea for a while…

I just love all of the different wood textures.

I have decorated this odd little built-in shelf in our front dining space so many different ways. But I have always wanted to do a Fall vignette with my collection of old wood cutting boards. It seemed like this was the right time to try out my idea.

An accidental collection

These old wood cutting boards are each so unique and beautiful.

I never intended to collect cutting boards. It just sort of happened. I love thrifting and am always amazed at the items that are discarded by others. Whenever I see an old worn cutting board at a garage or estate sale I usually get it. They are so beautiful and have a story to tell with all of their markings and discolorations. One mans trash…

Try and see what something could be with a little work

I found this State of Michigan wood cutting board at a garage sale for just a dollar. It had a bank’s logo burned into the surface- which is why I think they were letting it go. I just took it home and used my orbital sander to sand away the logo. In just a few minutes it was gone! Now it’s just a pretty blond wood board. Brand new in this condition it would have cost way more than a dollar!

Finding beauty in the utilitarian object

Don’t you love it when the handles have the hole to hang the board on a wall?

I am sure that some people will think that I am a little crazy writing about old wood cutting boards. But I think that when your home is filled with items that you find to be beautiful you will feel good in your home. That’s the goal, right?

Got a chip? No problem!

I added this sweet little vintage pitcher from 1973 to the shelf. You can see that the top lip has been chipped. I fixed it with a little wood putty and painted it brown. I love the mushroom and wood grain texture so much on this pitcher that I had to save it! And it fits in so nicely for my Fall decor.

I really love how this Fall vignette turned out!

I hope that I have shown you that decorating can be pretty simple when you use a collection you already own. Sometimes it’s just a feeling that you want to express with your decor.

  1. This is so pretty, Jackie! We so think alike with using warmer tones for fall with the wooden cutting boards and amber bottles! You have an amazing collection of wooden cutting boards and I never would have thought to sand down the logo on the one shaped like a state. Great idea!

  2. After reading this, I’m for sure going to be keeping an eye out for wooden cutting boards! I love all the different ones you’ve found!
