DIY Shibori Inspired Easter Eggs

Decorating Easter Eggs

Hey there! The ladies and I are decorating Easter eggs this time around for our little Sweet Moda Blog Project link up. The last time we got together to each show how we decorate and craft with plain glass jars. My friend Ashlee of Sweet Southern Oaks showed how to tint glass jars with Modpodge and food coloring. Go see Ashlee’s post for a fun and easy craft here- How to Tint A Glass Jar. And my friend Liz of Living with Liz showed how to get an ombre look on glass jars with spray paint. Be sure to go and see how simple it was to get a cool look in Liz’s post- Styling a Glass Jar. While I showed you 8 different ways to style a glass jar in your home. My Favorite Color is Blue!

I just love a deep Indigo Blue!

The ladies and I thought that with the Easter Holiday coming up that we would each show how we could decorate craft store eggs. My favorite color is Blue and I have been loving the Shibori trend for a while now. So I thought that with a little marker doodling that I could fake a Shobori pattern or two on some craft store eggs. It was a fun craft that I worked on while watching TV for a couple of nights. And if you can draw circles, rectangles, triangles, or just scribble- you too can decorate your eggs like these Shobori inspired eggs.

Start with the Basics

Don’t those plastic eggs look real?

Eggs and Markers

I found my craft eggs at the Target dollar spot for $3. They had these white ones, black chalkboard eggs, and a set with rainbow colors too! They also had sets that already had printed designs on them so that all you have to do is color them in. Such a great craft to do with kids! I then just pulled all the Blue markers I had in my craft stash. These are very basic water-soluble markers and if I were to do this craft again I might choose a permanent marker instead. My fingers were blue while doing this project but it just washed off with soap and water.

The Inspiration Pieces

Look at this cool tea towel I found at Target!

While I love to draw and doodle I needed a pattern or two to use as inspiration for my drawings. I looked at Pinterest and around my home. I bought this tea towel at Target a couple of months ago (it has since sold out) and just love the small circular patterns. The deep Indigo Blue was a color I wanted to replicate for sure.

Look to Etsy!

I found this throw on Etsy. The color is amazing!

I had recently purchased this vintage Shibori throw from a shop on Etsy for our living room. I am in the middle of doing a One Room Challenge about my makeover for our living room and this throw will be a featured element. Be sure to check out my post with my plans for the challenge here- Spring is here and so is the One Room Challenge

Get to Doodling

The first one is always the practice one

This was the first egg I started decorating. I thought I would use a couple of different colors of Blue to get the water color/ tie dye look of Shibori. I drew out the traditional triangle pattern with one medium blue and then went over it with another gray-blue. It wasn’t quite what I wanted, so I ended up covering as much of those two blues with a darker navy blue. You can still see one of the lighter blues behind it. I think that it works- not perfect but in the Shibori style.

It gets better with practice

Clean simple lines

On the next egg, I decided to just draw out the triangle pattern and leave as much of the white showing. I don’t think that this egg stands as a Shibori pattern on its own, but in a grouping, it does add interest.

Anyone can Scribble!!!

A fun pattern anyone can do

For this egg I just scribbled out a pattern with one light blue, and then went over it with the darker indigo blue. This was the easiest and fastest of all the eggs that I decorated. I really think anyone could do this one, and could done in any color combo that you like!

Just draw

A random circle and triangle pattern

I wanted to try and make a circular pattern like the tea towel but was unsure how I wanted to do it. So I grabbed a light blue marker and just drew circles, then made circles inside those circles, then connected all the circles with triangles in between. It was a fun and random pattern that kind of doesn’t make sense but that’s why I love it! Once all of the Pattern was drawn out, I went over it in the darker navy blue to match the rest of the eggs.

More Triangles

Triangles are the best!

Another pattern with Triangles in a light blue, but this time I colored the space between them with the indigo blue.

Lines, Lines, Lines…

Another simple drawn pattern

This egg was another one that was super quick to draw. A simple zig-zag pattern with the navy blue marker. The pattern almost looks like leaves.

Don’t think, just draw!

Love this pattern, and it was simple to do!

Here is another egg that I just started drawing without thinking, I started with the square/ diamond shape in the middle and then just kept drawing shapes further out with a stripe of white in between. Again I used two colors for depth and interest. It’s one of my favorites for sure!

The most Shibori like

Small circles and rectangles- genius!

While walking through the living room I took one more look at my throw I had received from Etsy. What stood out was that the pattern was just small circle and rectangles- well I could draw that! So simple and it turned out so good! It is my favorite Shibori egg that I decorated. I am so proud of all the eggs but this one really makes the collection.

K.I.S.S- keep it simple stupid!

Love that indigo blue!

This was the last egg that I decorated. Just circles and triangles. So simple!

If you love it- DIY it!

Don’t they look great all together?

In the end, what I learned was that the more simple the design the more I liked it. And that the deep navy indigo color blue was the clear choice for all of my Shibori eggs.

Now put them in a bowl and enjoy

How pretty are they in this milk glass bowl?
