Coffee Filter Flowers

Beautiful Flowers made from Coffee Filters and Food Coloring. Today I am teaming up with my good friends Ashlee of Sweet Southern Oaks and Liz of Living with Liz for another crafting project. Last time we worked with Jars and you can see my post here- 8 Ways to Style a Mason Jar. Be sure and check out what they crafted and both of their posts in the links down at the bottom of this one.

What Project did we choose?

Liz had been looking at Pinterest- she loves it as much as I do- and had gone down the coffee filter craft project rabbit hole. She suggested that they be the base of our next project and Ashlee and I were right on board!

Off to Pinterest, I went!

I found many DIY tutorials for paper flowers but this video from the Martha Stewart show with Cassie Chappell really inspired me. But it seemed like a lot of cutting and assembly. So the search continued for just the right project.

I wanted an easy project to try

When Liz had mentioned she got lost looking at all the different tutorials on Pinterest she wasn’t kidding! There are so many! I was looking at some really elaborate flowers- so complicated and others that were really easy to make. Since I was on Pinterest I made a new board- Coffee Filter Roses

If you’re not already- please go and follow me over on Pinterest. I am pinning things like a mother over there! 😉

When it came to making my own Coffee Filter Flowers I took what I had learned from all of the tutorials I had seen and made up my own way. A combination of sorts that was pretty easy. And I think turned out pretty good. Here are my super simple instructions:

These are the Supplies Needed:

  • Coffee Filters
  • Scissors
  • Stapler or floral tape
  • Food coloring
  • Cardboard to protect your work surface
  • small plastic bowl or dish
  • water

Make the Flowers First

Coffee Filter folding and cutting steps
Folding and Cutting Steps left to right- top to bottom

Using the basics of folding and cutting the coffee filters like a paper snowflake. I folded the coffee filter in half and in half three more times to get a small triangle. Then I rounded the top outer edge for the petal shape, and then cut off the point to make a center hole. Then I unfolded the coffee filter and cut along one of the folded lines to get a ruffled shaped C to make the flowers from.

Start Folding and Twisting

Fold and Twist those Coffee Filters

Using Three Coffee Filters to make the flowers- I took the first filter and accordion folded it half way and then started twisting the rest a round and round, adding two more of the filters as I went. I pinched and twisted the paper and was amazed at how much they looked like flowers pretty quickly.

Just Three Coffee Filters make pretty full flowers
Left to Right- One Filter, Two Filters, and Three Filters Full!

You can see that even with just the one accordion folded and twisted the coffee filter made a nice looking flower. Adding two more of the coffee filters really filled it out nicely.

Dip and Dye!

I didn’t get any photos of the Dip Dying of the Flowers but I have to say that was the most messy and FUN part!

Bright Colors Galore!!!

I made up a food coloring bath in a plastic container of Pink, then adding some Purple, and then finally Blue. Repeatedly dipping the flowers until I got the color combinations that I enjoyed.

I just love the Blue tips on the folds of the Flowers. I think it gives the Coffee Filter Flowers a realistic look.
